SECTION 01

Overview

Almost everyone travelling to Nepal needs a visa. The good news is that most nationalities can get one quickly and easily on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, or at certain land border crossings, without having to visit an embassy beforehand. This page explains how the process works, what to bring, and who needs to apply differently.

Visa rules, fees, and exemptions are set by the Nepalese government and can change. The information below reflects the rules at the time of writing, but please always confirm current requirements with the Department of Immigration or your nearest Nepalese embassy or consulate before you travel — see Section 09 for details.

SECTION 02

Visa on Arrival

Most travellers can obtain a Tourist Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport or a designated land border. Visas are issued for 15, 30, or 90 days, and allow multiple entries. Fees are paid in cash at the airport or border, in US dollars or another major convertible currency — clean, unfolded notes are recommended:

SECTION 03

What You'll Need at the Airport

•     A passport valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival

•     One recent passport-sized photo (color, plain white background)

•     Cash for your visa fee, in USD or another major convertible currency

•     A completed arrival card and visa application form (available at the airport, or online in advance)

Completing the online visa form before you travel can save time at busy periods, such as the spring and autumn trekking seasons.

SECTION 04

Nationalities That Cannot Get a Visa on Arrival

Citizens of the following countries are not currently eligible for a Visa on Arrival and must apply for a Nepal visa in advance through a Nepalese embassy or consulate: Afghanistan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Palestine, Somalia, Eswatini (Swaziland), Syria, and Zimbabwe.

This list is set by the Nepalese government and can change without notice. If you hold a passport from one of these countries, or are unsure whether this applies to you, please contact your nearest Nepalese embassy or consulate well before your planned travel dates.

SECTION 05

Free & Reduced-Fee Visas

•     Indian citizens: do not need a visa to enter Nepal.

•     SAARC nationals (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka): eligible for one free 30-day visa per calendar year. Additional or longer visits are charged at the standard fee.

•     Children under 10: may qualify for a gratis visa in some cases — please confirm current rules for your child's nationality with the embassy.

SECTION 06

Visa Extensions

If you wish to stay longer than your visa allows, you can extend it at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu, up to a combined maximum of 150 days per calendar year. Extensions are charged per additional day, with a minimum top-up period, plus a processing fee. Overstaying your visa without an extension is treated as a serious offense and is subject to a daily fine on top of the extension cost — please extend before your visa expires if you plan to stay longer.

SECTION 07

Trekking Permits & Restricted Areas

Your visa allows you to enter and stay in Nepal, but it is separate from the trekking permits, national park entry fees, and restricted area permits required for your specific expedition or trek. ACE arranges these permits on your behalf as part of your booking, as described in our Terms and Conditions.

SECTION 08

How ACE Can Help

Obtaining a valid Nepal visa is ultimately your own responsibility. That said, if you need a formal invitation or support letter for your embassy application, just let us know and we're happy to help. We cannot guarantee visa approval, as this decision rests solely with Nepalese immigration authorities.

I have been climbing for 15 years, over 4 continents. This was my 3rd trip to Nepal. And this was undoubtedly one of the Best-organised expeditions have participated in. Cannot thank Prakash and his Team enough. The attention to detail both in terms of equipment, climbing conditions, and accommodation/food was outstanding. And despite having limited exposure to high altitude alpine style climbing, always felt comfortable in the climbs and approach. I put this down to Prakash and his experience as well as the unique approach to team size. The small team ensures that a more flexible and sensible approach is applied to all technical aspects of the climb-including importantly how you physically feel and acclimatise. I needed to spend 5 days at Namche due to a sinus infection, and never felt that this jeopardised the rest of my climb. The same goes for weather delays. I eventually overran the climbing calendar by 5 days without a single complaint from Prakash and his team. You feel like a climbing partner rather than a paying client. My only regret is that Alpinist Climber Expeditions does not have a more international footprint as would have liked to climb with Prakash and his Team internationally as well as in Nepal.

Climbing at high altitude demands more than strength and determination — it requires the right equipment, careful preparation, and the ability to respond to changing mountain conditions. Our IFMGA-certified mountain guides carry specialized gear not only for their own safety but for the well-being of the entire team. Their packs are carefully organized with technical climbing equipment such as harnesses, helmets, crampons, ice axes, carabiners, ascenders, descenders, and safety slings, allowing them to manage steep snow, ice, and glacier terrain. Depending on the route, they may also carry snow pickets, ice screws, and extra rope for protection and rescue situations. Guides carry: Detailed route knowledge and maps GPS waypoints Weather updates via communication devices Climbing plan with turnaround times Decision-making tools are just as important as physical gear.
